What is Imovane 7.5mg?

Imovane 7.5 mg is a drug that belongs to a group of medications called sedative-hypnotics. It is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia (sleeping problems).

What is insomnia?

To understand if you have sleeping problems or not, first, you should know the meaning of insomnia. Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which you feel hard to fall asleep, frequent wake-ups during the night, wake up too much early, and find it difficult to get back to sleep. Insomnia causes you to feel tired when you wake up because of insufficient sleep. Insomnia affects your energy level, mood, and your general health. It also affects your performance, work, and life quality.

There are two types of insomnia:

• Primary insomnia: in which sleeping problems are not associated with other health conditions or problems.
• Secondary insomnia: it means you suffer a health problem that leads to trouble sleeping like depression, asthma, cancer, arthritis, heartburn, severe pain, or certain medication or substance use like alcohol. Treating the underlying cause of secondary insomnia may solve the sleep disorder.

Therapeutic indications of Imovane 7.5 mg:

Imovane 7.5 mg is used for short-term treatment of insomnia, including falling asleep difficulties, early and nocturnal awakening, situational, transient, or chronic insomnia, psychiatric disturbances causing insomnia, insomnia causing severe distress for the patient.

Imovane 7.5 mg takes about one hour to work.

Imovane 7.5 mg should be prescribed for no longer than 2 to 4 weeks. Longer use of this medication may cause your body to be dependent on it, it is unlikely to give the same effect.

How does Imovane 7.5 mg works?

Imovane’s active ingredient is Zopiclone. Zopiclone is a cyclopyrrolone derivative which is a short-acting hypnotic agent. The pharmacological characters of Zopiclone are similar to that of benzodiazepines. Zopiclone reduces sleep latency, increases sleep duration, and decreases the number of nocturnal awakenings.

Each tablet of Imovane 7.5 mg contains other inactive ingredients: calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium starch, glycollate, magnesium stearate, gluten, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate Octo macrogol 6000, titanium dioxide.

Do not take Imovane 7.5 mg if you:

• Drink alcohol or have alcohol concentration in your bloodstream
• Have severe sleep apnea (breathing stops temporarily during sleep)
• Have respiratory failure
• Have Severe hepatic insufficiency
• Have myasthenia gravis (weak muscles)
• Have acute or severe lung problems
• Have had a stroke
• You are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
• Are a child under 18years old

Before starting to take Imovane 7.5 mg:

• You should tell your doctor if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, or allergic to any types of foods, dyes, or preservatives.
• You should tell your doctor in case of pregnancy, as Imovane is not recommended during pregnancy.
• You should tell your doctor in case of breastfeeding.
• You should tell your doctor if you have any breathing problems, or you snore while you are asleep.
• You should tell your doctor if you are alcohol or any other drug dependent.
• You should tell your doctor if you have a mental illness or any other medical condition, especially: Thyroid problems, epilepsy, psychosis, depression, schizophrenia, or addiction to drugs or medicines.

Drug interactions:

Some medicines may interfere with the absorption of Imovane such as:

• Antihistamines
• Opioids or narcotic analgesics
• Muscle relaxants
• Benzodiazepines
• Medications that cause drowsiness
• Medications used to treat anxiety, depression, or mental illness
• Alcohol included in some drugs like cough syrups
• Antiviral drugs
• Medications used to treat fungal infections like ketoconazole or itraconazole
• Medications used to treat infections like rifampicin, clarithromycin, or erythromycin

Dosage:

The standard dose recommended is to take one tablet just before you go to bed. It takes around one hour to work.

A lower dose of half the tablet (3.75 mg) may be recommended for the elderly over 65 years of age, or for those who have renal or hepatic problems. The prescribed dose should not be more than 5 mg.

New dosage recommendations for Imovane 7.5 mg to be reduced to 3.75 mg to minimize the risk of next-day impairment.

Elderly patients or patients receiving Imovane 7.5 mg dose should be instructed to wait for at least 12 hours before driving, using machines, or making activities that require alertness.

Side effects of Imovane 7.5 mg:

Like other medications Imovane may cause some undesirable effects, tell your doctor if you feel any of them, however, some people may not experience any of them, those side effects include:

• Headache
• Dry mouth
• Bitter taste
• Drowsiness
• Heartburn
• Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
• Stomachache
• Rash
• Depression
• Agitation
• Confusion
• Dizziness
• Anxiety
• Blurred vision
• Impotence

Some serious side effects that require immediate medical attention, if you feel them stop the medication and call your doctor right away, those side effects include:

• Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or throat
• Hives
• Fainting

Warning: Imovane 7.5 has the potential for being an agent of addiction or abuse, that’s why it should be prescribed for a short period and caution should be taken while receiving this drug.
