Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes the person unjustifiable and repeatedly occurring seizures, the person is diagnosed to have epilepsy if he experienced two or more unexplained seizures, not explained by known medical conditions like alcohol withdrawal or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

What is Pregabalin and what are its uses?

Pregabalin is an anti-epileptic drug in the brain that causes seizures.

It also affects the chemicals that send pain signals through the nervous system.

Dose and administration of Pregabalin:

Pregabalin is taken according to your condition, severity, age, and how you responded to the first dose.

It comes in the form of capsules, oral solutions, and sustained-release tablets.

• For diabetic neuropathy (nerve pain caused by diabetes):

Adults (18-64 years):

Starting dose: 50 mg three times daily.

Maximum dose: 300 mg daily.

• For shingles (nerve pain caused by herpes zoster):

Adults (18-64 years):

Starting dose: 75-150 mg twice daily.

                         Or 50-100 mg three times daily.

Maximum dose: 600 mg daily.

• For focal onset seizures:

Pregabalin Child dosage (1 month – less than 4 years):

• For children less than 30 kg:

Starting dosage: 3.5 mg/kg/day, given in three divided doses daily.

Maximum dosage: 14 mg/kg/day, given in three divided doses daily.

• For children 30 kg or more:

Starting dosage: 2.5 mg/kg/day, given in two to three divided doses daily.

Maximum dosage: 10 mg/kg/day, given in two to three divided doses daily.

Pregabalin for Children (4 years-less than 17 years):

Starting dose: 3.5 mg/kg/day in two or three divided doses daily.

Maximum dose: 14 mg/kg/day in two or three divided doses daily.

Children (17years-less than 18 years):

Starting dose: 75 mg twice daily.

                          Or 50 mg three times daily.

Maximum dose: 600 mg daily.

Pregabalin Adults dose (18-64 years):

Starting dose: 75 mg twice daily or 50 mg three times daily.

Maximum dose: 600 mg daily.

• For fibromyalgia:

Adults (18–64 years):

Starting dosage: 75 mg taken twice daily. 

Maximum dosage: 450 mg daily.

• For nerve pain due to spinal cord injury:

Adults (18–64 years):

Starting dosage: 75 mg taken twice daily.

Maximum dosage: 600 mg daily.

Dose for seniors:

The doctor may decrease the dose as at this age the kidneys don’t function as well as they should.

Side effects of Pregabalin:

Common side effects:

• Headaches.
• Sleepiness and dizziness.
• Diarrhea.
• Mood swings.
• General sickness.
• Swollen hands, arms, legs, and feet.
• Blurred vision.
• Difficulties with erection in men.
• Hungry feeling.
• Memory problems.
• Blood sugar uncontrolled with those who have diabetes.

Serious side effects:

• Suicidal thoughts.
• Breathing difficulties.
• Severe dizziness or loss of consciousness.
• Hallucinations.
• Constipation.
• Difficulty in urination.

Interactions:

Drug-drug interactions:

• Aspirin.
• Celecoxib.
• Duloxetine.
• Apixaban.
• Fentanyl Transdermal System.
• Fish Oil.
• Metoprolol.
• Vitamin C (ascorbic acid).
• Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol).
• Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).
• Xanax (alprazolam).

Drug-alcohol interactions:

Taking Pregabalin with consuming alcohol increases the risk to experience side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty in concentration.

Drug-disease interactions:

If you have any of the following medical conditions tell your doctor before taking Pregabalin.

• Drug dependence
• Suicidal thoughts
• Angioedema (The area below the skin swelling, It is either an allergic reaction or hereditary disease coming from the parents).
• Elevation in creatine levels.
• Peripheral edema (Abnormal enlargement of your lower legs or hands maybe because of sitting for too long or standing for too long or it may involve a more serious disease).
• PR interval prolongation (Heart problem).

Precautions:

• If you experience any allergic reactions seek immediate medical help as Pregabalin may cause serious allergic reactions.

• Elders may experience harder side effects like difficulty in breathing; take care while you are using this drug with an elder person.

• If you are diabetic or have any heart problems, you must notify any weight gain while taking Pregabalin.
